沙丹豬扒飯 (Pork Chop with Tomato Sauce Over Rice)

Another simple plate meal for last Sunday dinner. When I was a kid, I felt like this is the food totally for kid. I asked for it every time when I went to a Portuguese-Macanese Style cafe with my parents. I finally stopped doing that when I went to junior high. I guess, I felt like I was all growth up and could try some other "adult" dish. This dish has a very funny Chinese name, which I bet nobody knows why it is called that way. I did some research and still couldn't find an answer. Well, whatever. But, there are several critical thing to make this dish right:

  1. You must include a sunny side up fried egg. It a must!!
  2. Use the "water added" ham. Yes, the cheap one not the good quality ham.
  3. Same thing for the sausage. Use hot dog or frank but not the good quality sausage.
  4. Use ketchup but not tomato paste for the sauce like the the sauce in the 焗骨飯

Ingredients:
  • 1 thin cut pork chop with or without bone
  • 1 hot dog or frank
  • 1 slide of water added ham
  • 1 egg
  • frozen chopped carrot and pea mix. You are welcome to use fresh one like I did.
  • 1 bowl steam rice
  • ketchup, sesame oil, light soy sauce, sugar, flour, salt and peper

Directions:
  1. Marinate the pork chop with soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar for 1 hour.
  2. Cook the rice as direction. In Macau, we use jasmine rice.
  3. While the rice is cooking, stir fry the carrot and pea. Add some salt. Set aside.
  4. Pan fry the pork chop, ham and frank.
  5. Meanwhile, in a small sauce pan, add ~2 table spoons ketchup, 1 table spoon light soy sauce and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let it steamer. Add sugar to taste. Then, thicken the sauce by mixing ~1 table spoon of flour with some cold water. Add the flour water into the sauce and keep stirring. Turn up the heat a bit. Sauce will thicken when boil. Add more flour or water to get the consistency you like.
  6. Prepare a sunny side up egg.
  7. To serve, add the cooked rice on a plate, top with the carrot and pea, ham, frank and pork chop. Pour the tomato sauce over. Then, top with a sunny side up egg. Done! We usually eat this with spoon and fork. For my family, we always ordered a plate of steam vegetable (油菜) as we are the vegetable lovers. Enjoy~
